The 7 Steps We’ve Routinely Recommended
To Clients Interested in
Organization Development
1. Clean-up the organizational “environment” to insure that people are
not in pain. Evaluate work environment, resources, compensation,
supervision, etc. Even though these components do not produce true
motivation, the pain that they can generate can be debilitating to an
organization.
2. Make sure you are betting on the right people. Since any organization’s
primary resource is its people, make certain your organization has
established an effective screening system for new hires and an effective
evaluation system for those already hired.
3. Establish a baseline. Gather some type of quantitative data that can
be used on an ongoing basis to measure progress.
4. Establish priorities. Since no company ever has unlimited resources,
it is important to work on the right things, in the right way, in the right
area, in the right priority…then plan to change them.
5. Create a top management team that not only shares common goals
but also shares common values. By developing a cohesive top level
team, the organization will be better able to demonstrate the commitment
that lower levels look to for leadership.
6. Commit the resources needed to accomplish your common goals.
Review asset allocation to insure that the top strategic priorities are
given the support and resources needed.
7. Involve your people somehow – almost any technique will work if it
involves those who are to be affected.
